The story behind San Miguel Mercantile

The San Miguel Mercantile emerged from a desire to combine living history with the retail community on Mission Street. In many ways, the shop represents a merging of the modern with the historic, American traditional with a European flair.

All this comes naturally to Miki Landseadel, who remembers her childhood shopping trips in Chicago as magical events. Having both Italian and French-German ancestry, she remembers early experiences sampling delicious baked torts in the French market and fabulous biscotti in the Italian delicatessen. The fragrance of handmade soaps and the visual pleasures of the old-fashioned department stores offerings, especially during the holiday season left a strong impression on her mind. And in her years of teaching high school English,  she nevertheless dreamt of bringing the bounty of several cultures together in one joyous shopping experience.

Miki's forays into Ferndale, California gave her an image of the capacity of a small town to charm and inspire its visitors. The Golden Gait Mercantile in Ferndale became a visual mentor to her and encouraged the concept of bringing the past to the present. Once she retired from teaching, her dream came into being. She opened the doors of the San Miguel Mercantile in December of 2010.

Today, the Mercantile continues to live up to the dream as a veritable cornecopia of great art and wonderful gift items.   Miki works to promote the small town charm of San Miguel as President of their Chamber of Commerce.
